Robots a Game Changer in Marine Shipping Industry

NANAIMO, BRITISH COLUMBIA - An innovative solution by Inuktun Services Ltd. can enable marine shipping operators to realize operational efficiencies, help protect the environment, and reduce risks to human divers, by employing amphibious robots to perform inspection and cleaning tasks beneath the waterline.

Inuktun, an industry leader in robotic crawlers, has designed a crawler called the MicroMag™ that can easily pass through the waterline from air to subsea without losing its magnetic bond on a ship’s ferrous surface. This advancement allows for the deployment of the crawler topside without any risk to personnel, while relaying clear visuals from the hull beneath the water line for inspection purposes.

The MicroMag™ can also be equipped with an ultrasonic (UT) sensor to determine metal thickness, as well as a wire brush to scrub biofoul off the hull and keel.

In a whitepaper just released by Inuktun titled No Man Overboard, Inuktun offers a solution to what marine shipping boardrooms have been challenged with for years: gaining a competitive advantage over fierce global competition by reducing fuel costs and downtime, lowering emissions, minimizing the propagation of invasive species, and improving inspection methods below the waterline.

“Originally, the MicroMag was designed for remote visual inspections on nuclear reactor heads.  It has been a valuable tool for inspecting steel tanks, pipes and pressure vessels,” says Colin Dobell, president and CEO of Inuktun. “But this crawler has proven itself to be reliable in the splash zone and underwater, where it remains fully steerable on virtually any plane.”

The result? An easily deployable crawler that provides answers marine shipping operators have been searching for a long time, especially in the splash zone.

No Man Overboard presents a strong case for the MicroMag™ as a game-changing robotic crawler offering significant upside potential for marine operators worldwide.
